2022 - Conflict in our midst
2022 was due to see us branch out and attend some of the largest living history shows in the country. However, that all came to a rather abrupt halt with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24. In the ensuing fallout from this, shows up and down the country chose to cancel their shows over fears of it being inappropriate to host Living History events. Some governing bodies, such as the Heritage Railway Association announced a blanket block on the events taking place during 2022. As a result of decisions like this, the number of large events we were planning on attending have appreciatively come down.
2022 would see us finally take part in the London2Brighton 100km in May, raising funds for the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. As would be expected, we took part wearing the uniform of Major, Lovat Scouts (one of the portrayals you can hire from us). The training was very much extended from what we were originally planning on, but this put us in good stead. With 25-35km training walks taking place every Sunday and swimming twice a week, we were more than ready to tackle the North and South Downs. The day of the event came, and we were able to achieve 56 out of the 100km on the route, with an official time of 13:48:52, which we are incredibly proud of, given that we were wearing battledress.
In addition to the fundraising hike, we would also start (admittedly very slowly) to increase our amount of equipment and uniforms available for hire. Among the new uniforms included our first Royal Navy uniform that covers the Second World War. Joined by newer uniforms, The collection grew and would by the end of the year stand at seven.
